Back to da' ATL
I was all set for two weeks of intense poker playing when I got a call to head down to Atlanta. Now spending my birthday driving in a car from the South to the North isn’t my ideal road trip for my birthday, but I figured Anita would talk my ear off the whole way and she tells interesting stories so why not. So I went online and booked my one-way airfare to Atlanta over the Memorial Day weekend. Sorry Atlantic City you will have to sit waiting for me until another week.
I suppose I’m not the best at travel and maybe that’s why I do so little of it. That is unless someone calls me the spur of the moment and wants me to leave on the spot without any planning. I’m a big fan of drop of the dime travel. Think Mexican-Kerouac.
So of course I get to the airport and I miss my flight. What is up with them wanting you there a hour before your flight? I was pissed and threw one of my Joaquin fits where I just stare at the person giving me their spill with disgust. They give me a later flight and I sit and watch my intended flight sit at the gate for another 30 minutes and now I’m very pissed.
Then out of thin air I was happy as hell to miss my flight. I am sitting there and this vision of life walks and sits in front of me. I thought for a quick second that I had died and went to heaven (if heaven is a waiting terminal at LaGuardia I’m all for it).
Then this lady next to her and opens her soda water and it spills all over the place. I quickly reach in my bag and pull out my handkerchief to help the damsel in distress who is sitting next to her. Of course I figure this will earn me cool points in general, but I know the technique here. The older lady says thank you and I ponder something. I’m sure when that lady was growing up that there would have been a hundred men pulling out their handkerchief wanting to help. Yet, we live in the world where a handkerchief is no longer carried by the men of the world and what a shame.
In any case, this vision of life moves seats for another lady but she is still in striking distance of my glance. I look up and she has this huge smile on her face. What can I say; I had a crush…bigger than the one I had on the girl from Bend it Like Beckham. Bronze skin, naturally curly hair, calves that any living individual on this earth would desire (male or female), pierced nose (I have always found this to be cute) and this raspy voice that was just all so sexy. We exchanged glances and I was in awe and handcuffed for a few seconds. I was fixated on her but not in a perverted sense…intrigued…yes, intrigued. It was if we had known one another for many of years in that split second. I think what we were having here was a MOMENT. Theme song for this moment is Strangers In The Night by Frankie Sinatra. Yet, my version is called, Strangers At The Airport (sorry that I butchered it Frankie).
Sure we all have moments you are saying. I agree. Chite, I have them everyday I sit on the train to and from work. Yet, I’m talking a real moment where there is energy more than just looks. Like a little buzz, not butterflies in your stomach, I’m talking about a buzz of electricity that flows from individual’s vision of one another. To be honest we both started laughing after a few seconds. I would like to think we both felt the buzz and thought, “damn crazy kids.”
This girl was like a hippy and I thought of her traveling the world without a care of it. O.K. she did seem a little nutty crunchy so she might care about the world, environment and stuff of that nature. With her backpack on I was sure she was just catching a connecting flight to Rome or Paris for the weekend and getting a late jump on it. That is the thing about MOMENTS…you can make the person to be what you want them to be. In my case, a nutty crunchy girl meets jet-setting hipster. My read told me there was this realness about her that can’t not be explained but only understood through visual site (sorry boys, no phone camera to nab a sneaky picture). You will just have to take my word on how beautiful and down to earth she was. So after a few crazy cute exchanges on the plane it was over.
In closing, I don’t tend to write crap like this because it’s funny lame in my view. This was one of those funny lame instances. Now I’m going back to my reality and my next post will be about my awesome time in Atlanta with Anita, how I found two new best friends in Neera and Sarah and how Anita spoiled me for my birthday.
