Weekend With Pinky!!!
Pinky came to the city this past weekend and of course we had a blast! On Friday night we went to her old college roommate’s birthday party in Hoboken, NJ. When in undergrad Pinky lived in a suite with a bunch of computer/engineer guys. It was an interesting group and I never really knew how Pinky got to room or why she wanted to room with these guys…they aren’t bad guys, just very different interest than Pinky. Yet, they have all stayed in touch over the years and continue to attend one another’s events and stay fiercely committed to their friendship. I find this neat given the day and age we live in…where people are always looking for instant gratification and not willing to cultivate something from scratch, something organic and something genuine. To say the least, their friendship is not only genuine but life lasting and that is something hard to come by and something I deeply admire from the outside.
The party had the wine theme to it so it was bound to get a bit saucy. Discussions started out innocent enough about what was going on in each others life. Then the wine started to kick in and the conversations took a turn for the strange. For instance, the discussion of one of the old roommates giving up masturbation for lint was an odd one. Or the unification of China/India for a new world power to reign over all other nations. As aforementioned, they are computer/engineer majors so these things get talked about in an interesting mumbo-jumbo back and forth type of way. From masturbation to world domination, I suppose I can draw parallels, but in reality there were none. In the end it was drunken babble which ended by the group engaging in the time honored tradition of smoking a cigar on the patio.
Upon the long commute home Pinky and her friend Little Shugs were laughing in their drunkenness. I also took notice how many people go to Hoboken to get trashed and head back to the city. I guess I’m just a city mouse so it’s never occurred to me to leave the city to party, but I guess there is this whole way of life for people. I suppose the reverse commute happens also.
On Saturday Pinky and I wanted to get some grub for brunch. We thought and thought about all the places we could hit to eat in this great city and settled on Le Pain Quotidien. This is a great little French Bistro that makes the best sandwiches and has the best coffee in NYC. Now I know, everyone has their favorite coffee place in the city, but seriously, this coffee is worth the trip alone. Not to mention is was sunny outside and everyone was walking by in their summer gear. Pinky being the Indian she is had the Chicken Curry with chutney. I, being Mexican had the bean spread with avocado and chives on my bread. We shared with one another but I couldn’t pick a favorite they were both that good.
I took Pinky down to the train station for her trip back home to Jersey and I was sad as ever to see her go. On the way home I got a text: “Thanks for a beautiful weekend”. I couldn’t have said it better myself…beautiful indeed.
