My Little City Blog

Nights and days pass in Gotham. Each area is distinct and posing its own reality…coffee shop, pizza parlor, and dry cleaners…all the same but different…in that they create many different realities. This blog is my reality.

NIGHT WITH PINKY, THE KID, AND AVENUE Q

wallpaper2005_05-1024

When Pinky comes to town it’s never easy to make her a happy camper. Well she never complains, but I try and bestow a City Surprise on her every visit. Yet, as I stay home more often now a days it’s hard to find the little gems that the city presents around every corner. So imagine my surprise when Pinky informed me that she would be handling the duties when she came into the city. I was a bit excited at the fact that I wouldn’t have to do any work upon her arrival because the night was planned.

So what was on the list? Unlike me who enjoys keeping secrets until the very last second, Pinky found it very important to inform me of the agenda a month in advance. Thus, I knew it would involve the Broadway play: Avenue Q and dinner. I was a bit thrown by the selection of Avenue Q (I will explain later). I’m not a Broadway guy for the most part and I just don’t follow the theater much here in the city. Yet, we did have a guest, Pinky’s “Straight” brother who was very into the scene of Broadway and knows everything that is in vogue in that world.

Backtrack; I was a bit in the dumps when Pinky arrived to my place because the damn bar up the street lost my card. I tried to be nice because I’m working on not blowing up over stupid shit, but it’s hard not to get mad when someone losses your bankcard and you have to function off fumes for the next couple of days until they find your card or a new one arrives. Yet, after seeing Pinky's excitment I had to smile and enjoy the night, how could I not?

So we left very early to eat at Nino's Trattoria. I was excited to have Italian, but upon arrival I think that Pinky was a bit thrown off. As tradition most people go eat at a swanky place before they hit a Broadway Show…us, well we had Nino's Trattoria. Sure the name invokes maybe something deep in mahogany wood with heavy tables, but this was far from that to say the least. What Nino's Trattoria lacked for in décor, it made up for in food and service. Sure it wasn’t fancy Itaian, but when has Italian ever been fancy? I say this with some reserve, but I hate it when American chefs try and make a simple plate of noodles and gravy fancy. Its noodles and gravy people...just make the gravy taste awesome and we are good. Well Nino's Trattoria obviously knows this and they fulfilled my request with great noodles perfectly cooked with delicious spicy meat gravy on top and a side of spicy sausages….nuff said. Did I mention that the bill was really inexpensive for three of us at a mid-town joint? The waiter was always making sure we were alright and for me that earned him the 8.00 dollar tip that was left.

Pinky was jumping out of her seat to make the show. Her brother was smart enough to point out that we should get there early to take a look at the theater. Some of these theaters are time capsules to a past that no longer exists. Serious, the room between seats is cramped (but not unbearable); the seats themselves aren’t wide, which leads you to believe that people were much smaller back in the day. O.K. they didn't have McDonalds back in the day...go figure people were smaller. The moldings on the wall are all original and just beautiful. I love to visit old Theaters.

As for the show...probably the best Broadway show I have ever seen. Sure I don’t see them all and many times its years before I see another one. Yet, the story line of Avenue Q hit home for me. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but I will just say this, it’s about growing pains in NYC and addresses such topics as sex, racism, and just finding your spot and PURPOSE in society.

So why is this different than any other play from the past? Well the Puppets of course. Avenue Q is a performed by both people and puppets. They have a few characters that live in an integrated neighborhood with the puppets. Somewhat like Sesame Street but with adult topics and adult puppets. Yes, it is racy in some parts so parents beware.

In closing, there is nothing better than spending time with Pinky and her brother in the city. They are my family out here on the East Coast and for that I’m very thankful to have such nice people around me. To top it off, Pinky proved that she, too, could pull off a successful night in the city (not that I ever doubted her). I really do hope that you all get the chance to see Avenue Q...its one of those gems that doesn’t come along often.
